This guide answers a smart-lighting or Matter lighting question and translates
it into a practical checklist for Rhythm users. If you are pairing compatible
Matter lights, the Rhythm Lighting LightHub can commission them from the
Rhythm app: choose Add Device, select Matter, then scan the
QR code or paste the MT: payload / 11-digit setup code. The
LightHub performs the commissioning handshake and keeps the device on your
Matter fabric.
Short answer
Matter supports over-the-air update mechanisms, but that does not guarantee every bulb brand distributes firmware through every Matter controller. Many lights still require the vendor app for firmware, release notes, diagnostic tools, or recovery. Matter can give you local control while firmware updates remain vendor-managed.
How to manage firmware safely
- Check the manufacturer’s release notes for your exact model and hardware revision.
- Update one test bulb before updating an entire room.
- Keep the bulb powered and close to reliable Wi-Fi or Thread coverage during the update.
- After updating, power-cycle the bulb and give Home Assistant, Rhythm, or other controllers time to rediscover capabilities.
- If Matter control breaks after an update, try controller rediscovery before removing and re-adding the bulb.
What Matter changes and what it does not
Matter standardizes core control such as on/off, brightness, and often color controls. Firmware delivery depends on the vendor, controller support, certification path, and how the update is hosted. A bulb can be excellent for local Matter control and still rely on the manufacturer’s app for updates.
Pairing with Rhythm
For compatible Matter lighting, Rhythm Lighting LightHub focuses on commissioning and local lighting control. Add the bulb in the Rhythm app by scanning the Matter QR code or entering the setup code with the phone, LightHub, and bulb on the same local network. Keep the vendor app available when the manufacturer requires it for firmware, but avoid duplicate schedules or scenes that fight your Rhythm setup.
Pairing with Rhythm
For Matter lights and bulbs, the LightHub is the bridge between the app and the device during pairing. Keep the LightHub, phone, and device on the same local network, keep Bluetooth enabled when the device requires BLE commissioning, and make sure the setup code has not expired or already been used by another fabric. Once paired, the LightHub can control the device locally as part of your Rhythm setup.
