This guide answers a smart-lighting or Matter lighting question and translates
it into a practical checklist for Rhythm users. If you are pairing compatible
Matter lights, the Rhythm Lighting LightHub can commission them from the
Rhythm app: choose Add Device, select Matter, then scan the
QR code or paste the MT: payload / 11-digit setup code. The
LightHub performs the commissioning handshake and keeps the device on your
Matter fabric.
Short answer
Matter does not mean a light works with no controller at all. A Matter light still needs something to commission it, store the fabric credentials, and send commands. For Matter-over-Wi-Fi lights that can be a Matter controller on your LAN. For Matter-over-Thread lights you also need a Thread border router. The vendor hub may be optional for basic control, but it can still matter for firmware updates, reset recovery, or brand-specific features.
What to check before buying
- Look for the transport: Matter over Wi-Fi, Matter over Thread, Zigbee, or a vendor-only protocol.
- If it is Thread, confirm you already own a Thread border router such as a compatible smart speaker, Apple TV, HomePod, or Home Assistant Thread setup.
- If it is Zigbee, assume you need the vendor hub or another compatible Zigbee coordinator.
- If the product advertises Matter, keep the QR code or manual setup code; you need it for commissioning.
Using Rhythm for this setup
For compatible Matter lighting, Rhythm LightHub can be the commissioning path from the Rhythm app. Keep the LightHub, phone, and light on the same local network, scan the Matter code, then assign the light to the right room before building schedules or circadian routines.
Pairing with Rhythm
For Matter lights and bulbs, the LightHub is the bridge between the app and the device during pairing. Keep the LightHub, phone, and device on the same local network, keep Bluetooth enabled when the device requires BLE commissioning, and make sure the setup code has not expired or already been used by another fabric. Once paired, the LightHub can control the device locally as part of your Rhythm setup.
