Pair Matter-over-Wi-Fi bulbs with the LightHub

Matter is the easiest of the three protocols Rhythm speaks — once you understand what it is. This page covers the canonical pairing flow for every Matter-over-Wi-Fi bulb the LightHub speaks to today (81 of them, across 16 brands), plus the things that go wrong the first time.

Before you start

• The bulb is powered and broadcasting in commissioning mode — the slow rhythmic blink, not the fast strobe.
• Your LightHub and your phone are on the same Wi-Fi network as the bulb. If your router puts IoT devices on an isolated SSID or VLAN, that isolation will block commissioning.
• You have the Matter setup code — an 11-digit numeric pairing code, or the QR that encodes it. It’s on the bulb, the box, or the manual. Don’t throw the box out yet.

2.4 GHz only. Most Matter-over-Wi-Fi bulbs ship with a 2.4 GHz radio. If your router doesn’t broadcast a 2.4 GHz SSID, or your phone is locked to 5 GHz during commissioning, the handshake fails silently. Drop your phone to 2.4 GHz for the next two minutes.

Pair the bulb

In the Rhythm app, every Matter pairing routes through your LightHub appliance. Your phone hands the setup payload to the LightHub; the LightHub does the BLE handshake, hands off Wi-Fi credentials it already stores, and admits the device to your fabric. You don’t enter network credentials on the phone.

1. Power it on. Screw the bulb in and flip the switch on. A new unit enters commissioning mode automatically. A used unit needs a factory reset first — see If it’s already paired below.

2. Open the Rhythm app. From the home screen, tap Add Device and choose Matter. The app talks to your LightHub appliance, which performs the actual pairing.

3. Scan the setup code or paste the payload. Point the camera at the QR code on the bulb, packaging, or instruction sheet. If scanning fails, tap into the field and paste the MT: payload or the 11-digit manual pairing code. Hyphens are stripped automatically.

4. Wait fifteen to thirty seconds. The LightHub handles the BLE handshake, hands off Wi-Fi credentials it already stores, and adds the device to your Matter fabric. You don’t enter Wi-Fi credentials in this step — the appliance owns them. Keep the screen open until the success state appears.

5. Assign a room. The bulb appears with its vendor name. Drop it into a room. Pick a curve. Done.

If it doesn’t pair

Most failures fall into one of four buckets. Try them in order — factory reset first, network second, fabric third, hardware last.

The bulb won’t enter pairing mode

It’s already commissioned to another fabric. Each brand has its own factory-reset recipe. The per-bulb page below has the one for your model.

The QR scans, but commissioning hangs

Almost always a network problem. Check that your router is broadcasting a 2.4 GHz SSID, that AP isolation is off, and that your phone and LightHub are on the same network. Mesh routers often put guest devices on a separate VLAN by default — turn that off for commissioning, then turn it back on.

“Already commissioned to another fabric”

The bulb is on Apple Home, Google Home, or SmartThings already. Two options: factory-reset it, or use Matter’s multi-admin flow. Open the existing app, tap Turn On Pairing Mode, and it gives you a 4-hour window with a fresh setup code. Use that code in Rhythm. The bulb stays on both fabrics.

Commissioning succeeds but the bulb is unreachable

Wi-Fi credentials didn’t take. Power-cycle the bulb once, wait 60 seconds, and the LightHub will rediscover it. If it doesn’t, the bulb’s 2.4 GHz radio probably can’t see your AP from where it’s installed. Move closer for a smoke test, then reinstall.
