Is the Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 a hub? What IKEA Matter devices actually need
The ZBT-2 is a radio adapter, not a standalone hub. Here is what actually runs IKEA Matter devices — and the simpler paths if you do not want a server.
Short answer
No — the Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 is not a hub on its own. It is a USB radio adapter that gives a computer running Home Assistant a Zigbee or Thread radio. Plugged into nothing, it does nothing: there is no brain inside. If your goal is simply to get IKEA Matter devices working, you have two clean options — pair them directly with a Matter controller such as LightHub, or commit to running a full Home Assistant server and import it into Rhythm. The first thing to check is which of those two setups you actually want to maintain.
Why the confusion happens
Hub advice online often compresses to buy the official dongle. That advice assumes you already run Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi, a mini PC, or a NAS. A hub combines two things: a radio that talks to devices and a computer that runs the logic 24/7. The ZBT-2 is only the radio. Products like the Dirigera, a Hue Bridge, or LightHub include both, which is why they work out of the box and a bare dongle does not.
Best path for Rhythm
- You just want the devices to work: if the box shows the Matter logo and a QR code, pair it directly with LightHub. No dongle, no server. Matter-over-Thread devices additionally need a Thread border router on your network — check the box for the Thread logo.
- You want Home Assistant anyway: run the Home Assistant server on always-on hardware, plug in the ZBT-2 for the radio, expose your devices as entities, then import Home Assistant into Rhythm so the rooms still follow one daily curve.
The direct Matter path is preferred when lighting is the goal: fewer moving parts, local control, and nothing extra to keep updated.
Before you pair
- Save the Matter QR code or manual setup code from every device box
- Keep phone, LightHub, and device on the same local network
- Confirm 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi is available for Wi-Fi devices
- Confirm a Thread border router exists for Matter-over-Thread devices
- Remove any half-finished pairings from Google Home, Apple Home, or Alexa before retrying
Reset and pairing mode
New devices normally ship ready to pair. If a device has been paired before, reset it using the exact steps in its paper manual or the manufacturer's support page — IKEA reset sequences differ per product family, and guessing at on-off timing wastes pairing windows. After a proper reset you should see the device advertise itself to whichever app is searching.
Pair with Rhythm
- Open Rhythm and choose Add Device.
- Choose Matter and scan the QR code, or type the setup code.
- Wait for commissioning to finish — Thread devices can take a little longer on first join.
- Assign the device to the right room.
- Test on/off, dimming, and color temperature if the device supports it.
