This guide answers a smart-lighting or Matter lighting question and translates it into a practical checklist for Rhythm users. If you are pairing compatible Matter lights, the Rhythm Lighting LightHub can commission them from the Rhythm app: choose Add Device, select Matter, then scan the QR code or paste the MT: payload / 11-digit setup code. The LightHub performs the commissioning handshake and keeps the device on your Matter fabric.

Short answer

Hue switch modules are useful when you want familiar wall switches to control Hue bulbs without cutting power to them, but they are not the only option. If you are maintaining dozens of switches, compare battery replacement, local control, guest behavior, and whether you want the circuit or the bulb to be smart.

Option 1: keep smart bulbs always powered

Use Hue switch modules, Friends of Hue controls, or compatible scene controllers when the bulbs need constant power for color scenes and adaptive behavior. This keeps the wall control familiar while preserving smart-bulb features.

Option 2: make the circuit smart

Use a listed smart dimmer, smart switch, or in-wall relay when the fixture uses normal dimmable bulbs and you mainly need on/off or dimming. This is often simpler for guests and avoids battery maintenance, but it can remove color control unless the bulbs themselves remain powered and smart.

Option 3: use keypads for scenes

Scene keypads work well in rooms with several lighting looks. Put common actions on obvious buttons: on, off, bright, evening, and night. Avoid overloading a single paddle with too many hidden multi-press actions.

Decision checklist

  • If the room uses color Hue bulbs, keep power constant and use a controller.
  • If the room uses ordinary bulbs, a smart dimmer may be cleaner.
  • If battery changes are painful, prefer wired controls where code and wiring allow.
  • If guests struggle, choose controls that behave like normal switches before optimizing for advanced scenes.

Pairing with Rhythm

For Matter lights and bulbs, the LightHub is the bridge between the app and the device during pairing. Keep the LightHub, phone, and device on the same local network, keep Bluetooth enabled when the device requires BLE commissioning, and make sure the setup code has not expired or already been used by another fabric. Once paired, the LightHub can control the device locally as part of your Rhythm setup.
