This guide answers a smart-lighting or Matter lighting question and translates
it into a practical checklist for Rhythm users. If you are pairing compatible
Matter lights, the Rhythm Lighting LightHub can commission them from the
Rhythm app: choose Add Device, select Matter, then scan the
QR code or paste the MT: payload / 11-digit setup code. The
LightHub performs the commissioning handshake and keeps the device on your
Matter fabric.
Short answer
When third-party Zigbee bulbs are paired to a Hue Bridge, they may expose enough features for color scenes while still behaving differently for on/off, startup state, or group commands. Hue compatibility is usually best with Hue bulbs; non-Hue bulbs can work, but they are not guaranteed to implement every command exactly the same way.
Practical checks
- Update the Hue Bridge, then power-cycle the affected bulbs.
- Remove and re-add one problem bulb near the bridge to rule out weak Zigbee signal during pairing.
- Test the bulb by itself before testing a room or zone scene.
- Check whether the issue is only the wall switch, only the Hue app, or only a HomeKit/voice command.
- If the bulb supports a startup behavior setting in its native app, configure it before pairing to Hue.
Why scenes can still work
A scene may send color and brightness values that the bulb accepts, while a separate group on/off command is ignored, delayed, or interpreted differently. This is common in mixed ecosystems because the bridge normalizes devices, but it cannot fix every firmware quirk.
Best long-term fix
For fixtures where physical fit forces a smaller third-party bulb, keep a short compatibility test period before buying more. If on/off reliability matters more than color, consider a smart switch or relay controlling a standard dimmable bulb instead of relying on a partially compatible Zigbee bulb.
Pairing with Rhythm
For Matter lights and bulbs, the LightHub is the bridge between the app and the device during pairing. Keep the LightHub, phone, and device on the same local network, keep Bluetooth enabled when the device requires BLE commissioning, and make sure the setup code has not expired or already been used by another fabric. Once paired, the LightHub can control the device locally as part of your Rhythm setup.
