This guide answers a smart-lighting or Matter lighting question and translates it into a practical checklist for Rhythm users. If you are pairing compatible Matter lights, the Rhythm Lighting LightHub can commission them from the Rhythm app: choose Add Device, select Matter, then scan the QR code or paste the MT: payload / 11-digit setup code. The LightHub performs the commissioning handshake and keeps the device on your Matter fabric.

Short answer

A battery-powered Matter over Thread switch can look like a new accessory if it loses its fabric state, is factory-reset during battery replacement, or is re-commissioned with the original setup code instead of waking back up on the existing fabric. The old tile in the controller is then stale, while the newly paired tile has a different internal identity.

Recovery checklist

  1. Wait a few minutes after replacing the battery. Sleepy Thread devices may need a wake press before the controller marks them online again.
  2. Power-cycle the Thread border router and controller, then press the switch so it wakes and advertises.
  3. If the accessory still shows as unavailable, remove the stale copy from the controller before pairing again.
  4. When adding it back, keep the phone and controller on the same local network and close to the Thread border router.
  5. Rebuild button automations only after the final device tile is stable.

Avoiding duplicate devices

Do not scan the original Matter code as a first step every time a battery device goes quiet. First try waking it, replacing the battery with a known-good cell, and restarting the border router. Re-scanning can create a second accessory if the controller no longer matches the old fabric record.

Pairing with Rhythm

For compatible Matter lighting, the Rhythm app and LightHub can commission lights by scanning the Matter QR code or entering the setup code while the phone, LightHub, and device are on the same local network. Battery switches may still depend on their own ecosystem behavior, but the same rule applies: wake the device and avoid unnecessary factory resets unless you are intentionally rebuilding the setup.

Pairing with Rhythm

For Matter lights and bulbs, the LightHub is the bridge between the app and the device during pairing. Keep the LightHub, phone, and device on the same local network, keep Bluetooth enabled when the device requires BLE commissioning, and make sure the setup code has not expired or already been used by another fabric. Once paired, the LightHub can control the device locally as part of your Rhythm setup.
