This guide answers a smart-lighting or Matter lighting question and translates
it into a practical checklist for Rhythm users. If you are pairing compatible
Matter lights, the Rhythm Lighting LightHub can commission them from the
Rhythm app: choose Add Device, select Matter, then scan the
QR code or paste the MT: payload / 11-digit setup code. The
LightHub performs the commissioning handshake and keeps the device on your
Matter fabric.
Short answer
If a Matter-over-Thread bulb suddenly says it needs a Thread-compatible home hub, the controller is no longer seeing a usable Thread border router for that home. A Wi-Fi-only Apple TV can act as an Apple Home hub for many automations, but it is not a Thread border router. Matter-over-Thread lights need a controller ecosystem with Thread border routing, or another Matter controller that can commission and route Thread devices.
What to check first
- Confirm the exact bulb transport. A Matter-over-Thread bulb needs a Thread border router; a Matter-over-Wi-Fi bulb needs only Wi-Fi and a Matter controller.
- Restart the home hub, router, and any Thread border routers, then wait a few minutes for the Thread network to reform.
- Check whether the bulb is still joined to the original Matter fabric. If it is half-commissioned, remove it from the old controller before trying again.
- Factory-reset one bulb and test it close to the border router before resetting every light in the house.
- If using Apple Home, make sure the selected home has a Thread-capable Apple TV or HomePod mini/HomePod that is online and assigned to the same home.
When a different Matter controller helps
For compatible Matter lighting, Rhythm Lighting LightHub can commission lights from the Rhythm app by scanning the Matter QR code or entering the setup code, with the phone, LightHub, and device on the same local network. That gives you a dedicated lighting-focused commissioning path, but Thread lights still need healthy Thread coverage and a controller path that supports their transport.
Avoid repeated failed pairing loops
Repeated add attempts can leave Matter devices in an awkward state. After two failed attempts, stop and verify the border router, phone network, Bluetooth permissions, and reset procedure. Commission one bulb successfully, place it in the correct room, then add the rest only after the first one remains controllable for several minutes.
Pairing with Rhythm
For Matter lights and bulbs, the LightHub is the bridge between the app and the device during pairing. Keep the LightHub, phone, and device on the same local network, keep Bluetooth enabled when the device requires BLE commissioning, and make sure the setup code has not expired or already been used by another fabric. Once paired, the LightHub can control the device locally as part of your Rhythm setup.
