Why will a Sonoff ZBMINI control the light but not pair with Home Assistant?

This guide answers a smart-lighting or Matter lighting question and translates it into a practical checklist for Rhythm users. If you are pairing compatible Matter lights, the Rhythm Lighting LightHub can commission them from the Rhythm app: choose Add Device, select Matter, then scan the QR code or paste the MT: payload / 11-digit setup code. The LightHub performs the commissioning handshake and keeps the device on your Matter fabric.

Short answer

If the wall switch and module button control the light, the load wiring may be correct, but Zigbee pairing is a separate problem. The module must be close enough to the coordinator, in the right pairing mode, and not already joined to another network.

Pairing checklist

  1. Put the Zigbee coordinator in permit-join mode first, then put the module into pairing mode.
  2. Bring the coordinator or a Zigbee router closer for the first join. In-wall boxes can reduce signal strength.
  3. Factory-reset the module if it was previously paired to eWeLink, another hub, or a failed Home Assistant attempt.
  4. Check that your specific ZBMINI model is supported by the integration you are using. ZBMINI, ZBMINI-L, and newer variants can behave differently.
  5. If ZHA does not find it, try pairing near the coordinator with other joins disabled so the module does not choose a weak route.

Safety note

In-wall modules involve mains wiring. If the wiring diagram does not match your box, stop and use an electrician. A smart module can appear to work while still being installed in an unsafe or non-code-compliant way.

Lighting control after pairing

Once paired, name the device by the light or room it controls and create automations from the logical light entity, not from the raw relay alone. That keeps scenes and schedules easier to maintain later.

Pairing with Rhythm

For Matter lights and bulbs, the LightHub is the bridge between the app and the device during pairing. Keep the LightHub, phone, and device on the same local network, keep Bluetooth enabled when the device requires BLE commissioning, and make sure the setup code has not expired or already been used by another fabric. Once paired, the LightHub can control the device locally as part of your Rhythm setup.
