Avoid smart-plug power resets for color lamps

Use smart plugs for power only when the lamp remembers its state; otherwise control color at the bulb or room layer.

A smart plug is a blunt tool: it removes and restores power. If the lamp behind it forgets its color every time power returns, the real fix is to control the lamp at the lighting layer instead of power-cycling it every day.

Pick the right control layer

  • Use the plug only for lamps that remember last state or have no smart electronics.
  • For color lamps, prefer a bulb, strip, or controller that exposes brightness and color directly.
  • If the lamp must stay on a plug, create a follow-up automation that reapplies the desired color after power returns.

Using Rhythm for this setup

When the light itself is available through Hue, Home Assistant, or Matter, Rhythm can set the room’s intended brightness and color behavior without cutting power to the device.
