Should you add shelf lights below a Hue TV Gradient strip?
Extra lights under a TV shelf can make Hue entertainment lighting feel larger, but they need careful placement so the screen does not become visually crowded.
A Hue Play Gradient strip behind the TV already creates a strong halo around the screen. Adding lights under the shelf can work, but only if they support the viewing experience instead of competing with it. Think of the shelf as a low accent zone, not a second screen-sized effect.
Start with one subtle layer
- Use a short lightstrip, small light bar, or compact accent lamp under the shelf before buying a full second entertainment setup.
- Place the light so it washes the wall or underside of the shelf, not directly into your eyes from the couch.
- Keep brightness lower than the TV backlight. If the lower shelf is as bright as the gradient strip, the picture area can feel visually heavy.
- Match the color temperature or entertainment scene when watching TV, then save a calmer warm-white scene for ordinary evenings.
- Hide the controller and cables first. A visible power brick or dangling strip can make the setup feel busier than the light itself.
Use Rhythm for the daily lighting state
Let Hue own the specialized sync effect around the screen. For everyday room lighting, keep a simple baseline that still works when the TV is off: soft lamps, low shelf accent light, and enough practical light to move through the room. If the same space is in Rhythm, use Rhythm to return the room to a comfortable Day or Sleep state after the entertainment scene ends.
