How do you use existing alarm wiring for motion lighting in Rhythm?

If a room already has old alarm-sensor wiring, the tempting move is to pile on improvised power cables, standalone scenes, and motion rules that never quite agree. The fix is to stop treating this as a pile of scenes and make Rhythm the source of truth for the room.

  • You already have a stable sensor path or plan to expose one through Home Assistant.
  • You do not want one vendor app to handle motion, another to handle color, and a third to handle bedtime.
  • You want the room to return to a predictable day or night state after motion events.

Before you start

  • Confirm the motion sensor path is reliable before you tune lighting behavior.
  • Bring the room into Rhythm through a supported path such as a Home Assistant light entity or imported hub.
  • Decide which room state should be normal during the day and which should be normal at night.
  • If you are reusing old alarm wiring for power, finish that hardware work before you start building room logic.

Do it in Rhythm

  1. Get the lights stable first. In LightHub, import the room through the supported hub or Home Assistant path you already trust.
  2. Create one clean Day profile for the room instead of multiple overlapping bright scenes.
  3. Create one Sleep profile with a warmer and dimmer fallback state.
  4. Use the motion signal only as a trigger to wake the room into the correct Rhythm state for that time of day.
  5. Let the room settle back onto the normal daily curve instead of freezing it in a one-off scene after motion clears.

Avoid double automation

If Rhythm is running the room, do not leave duplicate motion automations in the vendor app, HomeKit, Alexa, or Google Home trying to recolor or dim the same lights on the same trigger. Keep one motion trigger path, and let Rhythm own the room behavior after that trigger fires.

When this is actually a device problem

If the sensor misses movement, drops offline, or only works when the wiring is positioned a certain way, stop there. Rhythm can keep a room consistent, but it cannot fix an unstable sensor or a bad power path.

Good Rhythm settings to start with

  • Use a moderate daytime brightness that feels useful rather than dramatic.
  • Make the sleep state obviously warmer and dimmer than the day state.
  • Use temporary overrides only for unusual cases such as cleaning or guests.
  • Keep the room on one predictable curve rather than several competing schedules.

Once the room is stable, let Rhythm run the daily curve and keep the vendor app for firmware or special effects.
